Scholarship created in memory of Laker grad, longtime sports writer

Randy Whitehouse

Randy Whitehouse always looked forward to returning to Lake Region to cover a football game.

Even though he didn’t know the latest edition of Lakers, Randy always told a great story.

The Lake Region grad and longtime Sun-Journal sports writer passed away this past April at the age of 51.

To honor is award-winning writing and his friendship, Laker grad Kyle Rhoads is seeking donations for the creation of the Randy Whitehouse Memorial Scholarship, which will be given annually to a Lake Region High School senior planning to pursue writing, sports journalism or teaching. The recipient will be selected by LRHS staff using their scholarship application process.

“He championed for so many high school athletes and for Maine sports through his writing. Your donations will support future writers to tell amazing stories the way Randy so often did. Let’s continue his legacy and his impact on Maine athletics!” wrote Rhoads, who made the first donation for $500. “I’ll also match 50% of the next $1,000 in donations.
