Robert E. New, 87
NAPLES — Robert E. New, 87, a longtime resident of Montclair, N.J. and Naples, passed away peacefully at his West Orange, N.J. home on Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017.
Since his marriage in 1959 to Elsa (nee Shiman) New, he has been a summer resident in Naples. He “commuted†in early years between work in New York and Maine. With Elsa, he raised three children to love the Naples region. They, in turn, have raised six grandchildren at the same lakeside home.
In 1917, Elsa’s grandfather purchased a family retreat on the west shores of Long Lake, one hundred years ago. Countless relatives have fond memories of their summers in Naples.
Born in New York City in 1929, Bob served two years in the Korean Conflict, then went to work in the advertising specialty field, starting his own firm, Quality Associates, an innovator in Lucite embedment.
In Montclair, Bob was an ardent community activist, whose efforts helped serve needy citizens in the community, especially in the area of environmental issues.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elsa New; daughter Carolyn Jochem; sons David and Stephen; and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held in Montclair on Jan. 14.
