Richard Cantin

NAPLES — Richard J. “Papa” Cantin, 75, of Naples, died unexpectedly, Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2025, at his home in Naples.

He was born on Jan. 18, 1949, in Portland, a son of William and Elizabeth (Michaud) Cantin and attended local schools, graduating from Portland High School.

Richard was drafted by the U.S. Army after high school during the Vietnam era, but served his time in Germany as a tank gunner.

Upon his return from overseas, he married Cathy Lewis in Portland where they made their home until 1977 when they moved to Naples.

Most notably he worked at the Thomas Laughlin Plant and Barber Foods. Prior to his retirement, he also enjoyed his time working at the Naples Aubuchon Hardware in the 2010s.

Richard was a former member of the Portland Odd Fellows. He enjoyed tools, machinery and sourcing interesting “gadgets.” Papa is loved by his wife, Rev. Cathy Cantin of Naples; his daughter, Jill Crockett and her husband, Aaron of Sebago and their three children, Tanner, Gabrielle, and Ethan.

He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Estelle and Irene, and two brothers, Louis and Leonard.
A graveside service will be held in the spring at the Burnt Meadow Cemetery in Brownfield.
