Richard B. Merrill

Richard Merrill

Richard Bruce Merrill, 87, passed away October 17, 2023 at the Stephen’s Memorial Hospital in Norway, after a number of stays in the hospital.

He was born in Portland on October 10, 1936, to Kenneth and Iva Merrill. He and his 5 siblings were raised in Naples and later on in life moved to Casco where he attended local schools.

He was always a loving husband and father. He was a hard worker at any place he worked such as L.C. Andrew’s, Yudy’s Tire, a local lumber yard and Sebago Shoe where he worked with his wife Olive until they retired together.

He had many interests. He loved his antiques and his civil war collection as well as antique cars. Another was his love for music. He taught himself to play a number of instruments like guitar, piano and harmonica, being just a few. He was always sharing his music talent and his voice with many. You would always find him at the piano playing before church started and he looked forward to visiting the Casco Inn nursing home. Each time he’d get dressed in his western shirt, jeans, boots and top it off with his cowboy hat. He loved spending time with the residents and he made many friends and saw many smiles.

Richard was predeceased by his brothers Wayne and Bill, sister Elaine. His two sons Sergeant Daniel Lee Merrill and Richard Wayne Merrill.

He is survived by his loving wife Olive Merrill of 64 years of Poland, his sister Sandra King of Westbrook, Conn., his daughters Cathy Merrill Conley of Auburn, ME., Cheryl Merrill Underwood of Georgetown, Texas and Ken Merrill. Grandchidren Jeremy Stieben of Las Vegas, Nev., Amanda Beard of Blaire, Okla., Ashley Hartley of Naples, Claire Furman of Texas, and Clark Underwood of Okla. Three great grandsons and four great granddaughters and a number of nieces and nephews.
