Richard B. Edson, 67

Richard Edson

Richard Bruce Edson of Casco, passed peacefully in Bradenton, Fla., on February 17, 2021, with his wife of 46 years and his children by his side.

He is predeceased by his father George Edson of Casco; and his stepfather Donald Wyman of North Berwick.

Dick is lovingly survived and remembered by his wife, Roberta Merrill Edson, Casco, his son Jerred Edson and wife Christine of Limington; his grandsons Hunter and Tanner Edson, Limington; his daughter, Cressi Edson Hawthorne and husband Brad of Naples; his mother, Mary Edson Wyman of Portland; his brother, Robert Edson and wife Pam of Gray; his sister, Nancy Edson Leighton and husband Gary of Williamsburg, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Richard was born in Portland on July 4, 1953, the first-born son of George and Mary Edson of Casco. He graduated from Lake Region High School in 1971 and went on to earn an associate's degree in Marine Biology and Oceanography at SMCC in 1974. He and his family spent several years in Marlboro, N.Y., raising their family and making lifelong friends. He enjoyed the time spent on the Hudson River, doing environmental studies. After several years in New York, the family returned to Dick’s hometown of Casco. Dick and Roberta recently retired to spend time in Bradenton, Fla., as their “snowbird” home.

Dick found joy in all things athletic, whether playing sports like basketball when he was younger or watching live sporting events. His children cannot remember their father ever missing one of their games. He enjoyed sharing his “love of the game” with younger generations. Those who were blessed enough to receive his encouragement will have fond memories of his instruction such as “wrist-snap, spin-back and follow-through.”

A private family memorial time will be planned for a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to: Lake Region High School Basketball Program, c/o Paul True, Athletic Director, In Memory of Richard B. Edson, 1877 Roosevelt Trail, Naples, ME 04055.
