Player of the Week: David DelVecchio

David DelVecchio

David DelVecchio has not only been an ambassador of the Lake Region varsity boys’ tennis program, but he is “a great motivational leader and also a competitive player,” Coach Joe Dorner said.

“David has been with the program since he was a freshman. He had great potential that I recognized back then. He took criticism to heart and worked to improve his game when he could. He would let teammates know what potential they have and also let them know that he was proud of the fact that his teammates challenge him for his points in their play in matches, making him work hard to earn it,” the coach said. “He continued that hard work this season, climbing into the singles bracket and even competing with other singles players within the conference. He was able to earn game wins against an opponent when others on the team didn’t. That didn’t keep David from making it known with his many motivational speeches he gives the team whether it be at practice, before a match, after a match, etc. reminding the team that most of the players are just starting out, learning the game, and to not get frustrated with the challenging players that face us.”

The Laker junior was also involved in offering feedback on how to improve against opponents during set switches.

“For that, he displays great leadership that a captain should. I am proud of the player that David has become and more importantly continues to learn, work hard, and endorse our program as I would want to see it,” Coach Dorner added. “I look forward to seeing him continue his advancement in the sport and where it can take our program in the future.”

In recognition of his strong work ethic, determination, commitment and good sportsmanship, David is this week’s Boosters and Hancock Lumber “Player of the Week.” Each week, a Lake Region athlete is recognized for his/her dedication (does more than what is asked), work ethic, coachability and academic good standing. Recipients receive a specially-designed t-shirt, sponsored by Hancock Lumber.

Q. How has sports prepared you for your future? Sports, especially tennis, has helped me be more patient.
