Philip W. Harmon
Philip “Floydee” Wayne Harmon, 78, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2024, at his home in Gulf Breeze, Florida. The day prior he was, as usual, the life of the party as friends came to visit him for the last time. For many, his home will always be Bridgton, where he was born and raised with his two sisters and the other “Harmon Boys,” and then later raised his own family.
Phil was born on August 2, 1946, the son of William E. Harmon and Martha E. Chandler.
He graduated from Bridgton High School in 1965. After high school, he worked and traveled around the United States. It was during these travels that he received his draft card, so he returned home to enter the U.S. Army. At Fort Sam Houston, he was trained as a medic and then applied that training in the Vietnam War. Upon returning home to Maine after his tour, he explored different professions, ultimately deciding to use the GI Bill to attend the University of Southern Maine to study Business and Accounting. He entered into the accounting profession as an Enrolled Agent (EA), becoming an authority in the Lake Region area. He later established his own firm, Harmon, Jones, and Matthews, P.A., and served the area for over three decades. When the grind of tax season concluded, Phil loved navigating his boat on Long and Sebago Lakes on day-long adventures with his kids and their friends, often stopping in Naples to spring for ice cream for all his passengers.
Early in life, he found the beautiful beaches of the Gulf, and he knew he eventually wanted to return. He spent his retirement happily on the beaches of Pensacola with his Panhandle Partner in Crime, Susan Gottschalk, but frequently brought the warmth of those beaches to his family and friends on his return visits to Maine.
Between his passing and the writing of Phil’s obituary, it’s clear through messages of support to his family and tributes on social media that Phil meant a lot to many people in really all the same way. He was so very generous; sharing his time, kindness, good humor, thoughtful advice, and friendship. It’s written in his high school yearbook that “he walks down the street with a smile and a hello for all.” We have no doubt that where he is now, he is “bumping his jibs” with his family members and many friends that predeceased him.
Phil was predeceased by his beloved son, Aaron; his parents; brothers, Kenneth and Randy; sister, Katherine Morrill; brother- in-law, Dennis Hewson; sisters-in-law, Gail (Pike) Harmon and Sue Patneaude; and stepfather, Leonard Elmer Hilton.
Surviving Phil is his longtime partner Sue, her children Amity Gottschalk and Ryan Knable, and grandchildren Cameron, Adalena, Niko, and Ollie; son, Chris Allen and his partner Karyn Marden, and their daughter Katherine; daughter, Maryellen Stack and her husband Noel, and their daughters Abby and Caroline; son, Jeremy and his wife Nicole, and their children Ava and Ethan; and stepdaughter, Beth Allen, her brother Adam, and her daughter Lauren. Phil is also survived by his brothers: Robert and his wife Anne; Stan; Jim and his wife Becky; and Paul and his wife Becky; his sister, Sandra Hewson; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
The family will be planning a celebration of Phil’s life in the spring of next year in Maine.
