NAPLES— Volunteerism plays a major role in the world of scouting.
Volunteers are the glue that holds together the various local troops that exist under the umbrella of the Girl Scouts of Maine and the Boy Scouts of Maine.
In order to pay for activities, fledging troops fundraise. Sometimes, paying rent for a place to meet can be a drawback.
On Monday, the Naples Select Board voted, 4-0, to waive facility-use fees for any scouting troops. Select Board member Bill Adams was absent.
Recently, when the Town of Naples updated its fee schedule, it put into place a cost of renting the town-owned buildings. It is up to the select board to waive those fees.
On Monday, the topic of waiving facility-use fees for scout troops had already been placed on the agenda.
If any group or organization desires to have the fee waived for using a town-owned building, the first step is to fill out the application. The applications are available through the Community Activities Director (CAD) Brian Crockett in the recreation department.
The only way a fee can be waived is through a select board vote, according to Naples Town Manager Jason Rogers.
“The Community Activities Director can alter it, if the board votes it is in the best interest of the community,” Rogers said. “It prevents one single person from making the decision.”
