Lt. Col. John H. Smith, 88
Lt. Col. John Henry Smith, 88, passed away on Dec. 1, 2017.
He was born on Oct. 18, 1929, in Beverly, Mass., and had a happy childhood. A highlight of his youth were the summers he spent from ages eight to 18 in Sebago at Camp O-AT-KA.
In those wonderful years, lifelong friendships were formed. John remembers with fondness working in the dining hall and kitchen. John believed in Camp O-AT-KA, cherished his time there, and was a lifelong financial supporter. He was a wonderful role model and wanted other young boys to have similar opportunities.
A lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corps, John served 22 years active service. He also held positions on the administrations of OIT in Klamath Falls, Oregon, and Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska.
John and his wife Nancy were married for 62 years and raised two daughters. He enjoyed travel, sports, reading, cooking and opera. John was a generous, honorable man. He is remembered for his service to community and country, loyalty to his friends, and devotion to his family.
John was predeceased by Nancy in May 2017.
He is survived by his daughters, Sally and Susie; seven grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
