Lois M. Jones
Lois Marie Valente Jones, 89, passed away after a long illness at her home in South Bridgton on November 27, 2023.
She was born on July 11, 1934, in New Haven, Conn. As a child, she lived in Hamden, Conn., with her mother, Minnie, father, Andrew and brother, James. She attended Hamden Schools until 1950. Later, the family moved to Guilford, Conn., where her father was the chef/owner of the renowned Sachem Country House restaurant for many years. The restaurant became a family affair with all members employed in a variety of roles. It was at Guilford High School where she met the love of her life, Rob- ert “Bob” Jones. They were married in 1954 and had two sons, Robert and Christopher.
Bob and Lois moved to Bridgton in 1971 after falling in love with the area while visiting relatives who had already settled here. Part of the lure in moving to Bridgton was having a ski mountain in your own town. The family frequently could be found skiing the slopes of Pleasant Mountain. Lois and Bob were active in the community and their church. Both served as deacons at the Bridgton Congregational Church.
Lois was well known in Bridgton having had a long professional career with jobs at Town & Country clothing, Main St. Variety, Howell Laboratories, as a rental manager at Foster Realty, and later at Toole Realty. She was the head receptionist at Chalmers Realty and Insurance Company for 19 years, where Lois was known as the “Voice of Chalmers.” She even had her own parking space, “Reserved for Mrs. Jones.” After retiring, Lois volunteered at Bridgton Hospital.
She was passionate about the Boston Red Sox and enjoyed several trips to Fenway Park to cheer on the home team. Lois loved her beautiful flower gardens and enjoyed her birds that visited her feeders, especially the cardinals. Travel was also a passion, and she was thrilled to visit Italy, the home of her ancestors. She also enjoyed trips to Florida and several island getaways. Locally, she loved spending time at Woods Pond, Salmon Point or a trip to the Maine coast with her extended family. The ultimate host, there were frequent visits from family and friends where she enjoyed showing them the beauty of Maine. An avid cook, like her parents, there would frequently be a large pot of sauce on the stove or some other delectable in the off chance a guest would arrive. If you were lucky, you may have been at one of the several weddings or special events that she and Bob catered in the area. In her later years, she became an avid reader and loved watching Outlander, Blue Bloods and most of the current cooking shows.
Lois was predeceased by her parents, brother, and husband, Robert.
Lois is also survived by her sons Robert Jones and his partner Cindy Normand of Bridgton, and Christopher Jones and his wife Leslie of Newport, Maine, her grandchildren Jessica, Elijah, Ronald, Leah, and Chelsea, and several great grandchildren.
Lois always had a smile and a helping hand for anyone she came across. She will be sadly missed but fondly, remembered forever.
The family would also like to thank Androscoggin Home Healthcare and Hospice, and especially Ann for the outstanding care Lois received over the past 15 months.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name can be made to the Denmark Congregational Church, Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, or the charity of your choice.
