L. Ronald Sislane
L. Ronald Sislane Jr., 93, passed away at his home in Sweden on August 31, 2024.
Ron was born in Dedham, Mass., on August 23, 1931, to parents Leo and Jean (Mitchell) Sislane. He was predeceased by his wife Carol (Heers)
Sislane. He is survived by a sister, Sandra (Sislane) Harris (Tavares, Fla.). Ron was educated at Dedham High School and Brewster Academy, playing both football and hockey. He first studied Business Administration at Burdett College before joining the Air Force in 1951. He received recognition for his involvement in Operation Little Switch, a prisoner and patient exchange between China/N. Korea and Allied troops. He returned from service in Korea in 1955 and married Carol Heers, Natick, Mass., in 1956. Ron completed his undergraduate degree in Geology at Boston University in 1958. He and Carol then moved to Montana, where he obtained a master’s degree in Geophysics at Montana State University.
Ron’s professional experience includes teaching science at Wayland H.S. (Mass.) and Berlin H.S. (N.H.), where he also coached football and hockey. In the early 60s, he was employed by the Atomic Energy Commission in Oak Ridge, Tenn., promoting atomic science and technology curriculums, before joining a research team to study premature ignition in rocket launching. In the mid 60s, he bought Northeast Marina on Lake Winnipesaukee and made Wolfeboro, N.H. home to Carol and their five children.
When returning from a Boston trip, he stopped in Sweden to ask directions and discovered the home that would become their haven for 55 years. Ron became employed in sales by Arctic Enterprises (Thief River Falls, Minn.), a relationship that lasted decades. In Maine, the family gardened, raised Quarter Horses, fished, hunted, and enjoyed many sports. He and Carol loved the land and the peace of Sweden.
Ron’s other interests included coaching and playing ice hockey. Having played for the Berlin Maroons, he is included in N.H. Legends of Hockey. He also played in Nagoya leagues while in the Air Force. He loved to ski, golf, and play tennis. For years, he and Carol enjoyed playing cribbage with their good friends in the Lovell cribbage group. They especially enjoyed their summer months spent in Bar Harbor and Southport.
He was a member of the North Fryeburg Community Chapel and a deacon and longtime member of the Sweden Community Church.
