Gwen Akers

CASCO — Gwenneth Y. “Gwen” Akers passed away February 4, 2025.

She was born October 9, 1935, in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She lived in Brookvale, Nova Scotia until moving to Maine with her parents in 1947. She attended a one- room school through 8th grade in Brookvale, first year of high school in Livermore Falls and three years at Buckfield High, graduating from there in 1952. She then attended Mount Ida college in Newton Mass., graduating in 1954.

She worked as a medical assistant in Boston, Mass., marrying Clifford Akers Jr. of Casco; a marriage of 44 years.

She was active in PTA, Girl Scouts, Casco Village Church, Pleasant Mountain SAD #61 Ski program, Casco Days and many Casco town committees. She taught school for 25 years in SAD #17 at the Otisfield Elementary school retiring in 2000.

She loved gardening, and helping with all her grandchildren. She was the caretaker for her parents in their golden years. She loved where she lived on the corner of Edwards Road, watching the seasons change and all the activities on Crescent Lake. She spent nine years with her family friend Mal Gilvar vacationing the winter months in Melbourne and Jensen’s Beach on Hutchinson Island, Fla., until his passing in 2019.

She leaves behind her sister Donna Nugent (Patrick) of Franklin, Mass., her brother Stewart Kinley (Lynda) of Fairfield, her children Rebecca Akers (James Taplin) of Casco, Randall C. Akers (Heather) of Newry and Chris Akers of Casco. Grandchildren Ryan Akers (Kelly), Trevor Akers, Rachel Sheltra (Zachary), Eliza Jones (Tucker) and Tucker Lapointe. Great-grandchildren Avery and Braden Akers and Madelyn Sheltra.

A celebration of Gwen’s life will be held Saturday, May 24, 11 a.m. at 78 Edwards Road, Crescent Lake.
