Geraldine G. Thorpe
THE VILLAGES, FLA. — Geraldine Grant Thorpe, 76, of Lady Lake, Fla., and Casco, died Oct. 19, 2023, in The Villages, Fla.
She was born to Bill and Janet Grant on February 19, 1947, in Washington, D.C. As a teen, Gerrie and her family moved to Casco, where she met her beloved husband Elwin R. Thorpe. Gerrie and Elwin married March 30, 1963, in Casco. They built two homes, raised their family and shared 55 years of faith, love and adventures. Gerrie spent her early years raising her family and enjoying a career as
a hairstylist. She and El opened their home and hearts to the local youth and touched numerous lives. Many nights were spent around their table playing Canasta and telling stories.
After their children were grown, Gerrie realized a lifelong dream when she returned to college to pursue her Education degree. She completed her degree and later a Masters where she graduated magna cum laude from University of Southern Maine. She went on to have a wonderful career as a middle school teacher at Oxford Hills Middle School. She loved her students, and they loved her. They also found a faith home at the Vineyard Church in Mechanic Falls, where they shared and celebrated their deep and abiding faith. Their faith allowed them to face El’s long battle with vascular disease with grace. Gerrie was a powerful and unabashed prayer warrior who shared her faith openly and warmly with anyone in need. To be in her presence was to feel His grace and goodness.
Upon retirement, Gerrie and El moved to Florida for warmer winters and to be near his brothers and sisters-in-law. In retirement, they continued to host the family in Maine with an Epic Annual Lobsterfest. They traveled West to support Will, Crystal and the boys. They never failed to visit Lynne, Dan and the kids in Virginia. And, they cherished their time with Clint and his family in Maine. They were the quintessential grandparents.
In Florida, they built a new circle of beloved friends. When Elwin was called Home in January of 2018, the Water Oaks gang became a cherished circle of love and support for Gerrie. She was beloved by friends and family from East to West and North to South. And she will be missed by all of us.
Gerrie is survived by her three children — Lynne Batiste (Dan), Clint Thorpe (Cindy), and Crystal Gwyn (Will), nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held in Maine in the summer of 2024.
A memorial service celebrating Gerrie’s life will be held in the summer of 2024 at the Vineyard Church in Mechanic Falls with time and date to be announced.
Interment will be in the Webb’s Mills Cemetery. Local arrangements are in the care of the Hall Funeral Home in Casco where condolences and tributes may be shared at www.hallfuneralhome.net.
