George R. Wright

ORONO — George R. Wright, 82, died March 11, 2022, at a Bangor healthcare facility.
He was born August 11, 1939, in Richford, Vt., the son of Richard M. and Helen H. (Ripley) Wright. George graduated from Canaan High School, Class of 1957. Following graduation, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1957 to 1960. After he returned from serving his country, he went to complete his B.S. degree from Lyndon State in Vermont, his master’s degree from Ball State in Indiana, and then continued his education at LSU. After graduating
from Ball State, he went on to teach Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Lorain County Community College in Elyria, Ohio, for 24 years before retiring to Harrison, Maine, with his wife, Joan. After retirement, George worked for Maine Survey. George was a devout member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Elyria, Ohio, and continued his faith at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Bridgton. George was also a member of the American Legion in Harrison. George was an avid sports enthusiast that was shown by his love of his New England sports teams, none more so than his beloved Red Sox.
Surviving in addition to his wife, Joan (Maxfield) Wright, are his daughter, Mary Halterman, of Hollis Center; son, Maxwell and his wife, Kristine, of Haymarket, Va.; stepdaughter, Amanda Henderson and her husband, Jon, of Orono; stepson, Jason Ross and his wife, Allison, of Bridgton; eight grand- children; one great-grandson; one brother, Russell Wright of Brunswick, Ga.; his first wife, Barbara Jean Maxwell, of Elyria, Ohio; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to his parents, George was predeceased by brothers Richard, James, and Frederick; and sisters, Prudence and Patricia.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date with announcement to follow.
