Four local athletes named to West Lobster Bowl squads
Maybe a ray of good news on the high school sports front after yesterday’s announcement by the Maine Principals’ Association that due to Covid-19, the spring high school sports season has been canceled — four athletes have been named to the 31st Maine Shriners Lobster Bowl Classic.
Three football players:
• Brandon Sargent of Lake Region, who was a bulldozer at 5-foot-10, 185 pounds as a fullback and linebacker for the Lakers. He has been selected as a tight end for the West squad.
• Calvin Southwick of Fryeburg Academy showed his versatility and team-first attitude this fall, switching from running back (a position he dominated at as a junior to help lead the Raiders to the state title game) to quarterback. He helped lead the Raiders to another playoff berth this past fall, and saw time on defense. At 5-foot-10, 180 pounds, Southwick is listed as a defensive end for the West.
• Jack Campbell of Fryeburg Academy was a hard-hitting linebacker and leader of the Raider defense. Like his fellow “backer” Tucker Buzzell who formed the fearsome threesome in the state title run (along with Reese Kneissler), Campbell helped anchor the offensive line this past fall. At 6-feet, 200 pounds, Campbell is listed as an offensive lineman for the West.
• Finally, Brooke Chase of Lake Region was selected as a member of the West cheering squad.
The West, which won 60-14 last year, will be coached by Chris Yates of the Class D champions Lisbon Greyhounds. The Lobster Bowl is scheduled for July 18 at Thornton Academy. While it remains unclear whether the game will be held due to the current pandemic, the all-star squads were announced this past week to recognize these standout athletes.
