Ethelyn A. Vaughn, 92

CASCO — Ethelyn Alice Vaughn, 92, of Casco Village, passed away on the morning of August 17, at her home surrounded by family.

Ethelyn was born March 28, 1928, in Bridgton to Beryl Norene Leach Winslow and Eugene Everett Winslow. They lived on Leach Hill Road in Casco, in a house they built next to the old Leach Farm, which was originally built in 1794 by Beryl’s second great-grandfather, Mark Leach Jr. Beryl, an accomplished pianist, passed on her musical passion to Ethelyn who also played piano and violin. Eugene served in the U.S. Army during World War I and was the Road Commissioner for Casco.

Ethelyn graduated Casco High School before attending Pelletier’s Beauty School in Lewiston. On February 12, 1955, she married Donald Vaughn, also of Casco.

During their 65-year marriage they raised one daughter, Wanda Elaine and two sons, Glen Eugene and Kevin James.

Ethelyn enjoyed her time as a Cub Scout den mother and has always maintained an active membership in the Casco Village Church, United Church of Christ, where in the past she has held the of ce of clerk, taught bible study and played piano for Sunday School. For 70 years, she also sang in the church choir, and more recently participated in the Prayer Shawl Ministry, hosting gatherings at her home and knitting many prayer shawls that have been gifted to those needing comfort, healing and love.

Donald and Ethelyn enjoyed years of square dancing with the Swinging Pine Cones, traveling throughout New England. She also found great joy working in and sharing the beauty and abundance of her ower and vegetable gardens.

Ethelyn didn’t have to spend more than a few weeks without Donald, who passed in June of this year. She is survived by daughter Wanda Vaughn-Carr of Casco, son Glen Vaughn and wife Stefanie Vega of Woodland Hills, California, son Kevin Vaughn and wife Barbara of Casco, granddaughter Miranda Patterson and husband Chris of Windham, granddaughter Andi Mitchell of Los Angeles, California, grandson Cree Mitchell of Casco, step-granddaughter Dr. Stephanie Carr of Oneonta, New York, step-grandson Jason Carr and wife Laura of Steep Falls, step-grandson Michael Carr of Bangor, step-granddaughter Tatia Vega and son Lucius of Vancouver B.C., as well as many loving nieces, nephews and extended family.

There are truly no words to describe the impact Ethelyn had on those closest to her. She will be remembered affectionately, not only by her family but by numerous friends and loved ones in the community and will be greatly missed.

There will be a private graveside service at Mountain View Cemetery in Casco.
