Emma F. Pitts, 94
Emma Frances Hobbs Pitts, 94, died on Wed., Aug. 25, 2021, at Bella Point in Fryeburg, Maine with her daughter by her side. Emma was born on August 1, 1927, in Norway, Maine, the daughter of Frank H. and Mary Louise Hunter-Antaya Hobbs.
She attended Guy E. Rowe Elementary School and Norway High School. She worked for her father at the Union Square Candlepin Bowling Alley on Tannery Street in Norway. She also managed her father’s restaurant, The Bowling Alley Lunch Room, located on the corner Tannery and Main Street. In 1946, she went to work at the New England Telephone Company which was then located over the Norway Savings Bank in Norway. She worked there two years.
Emma met Samuel (Bud) Lee Pitts Jr., of Harrison, Maine, and married on April 30, 1948, in Bethel, Maine. They moved to their home on Main Street in Harrison where they lived for 20 years and raised their three daughters, Donna, Kathy and Judy.
They ran the Lakeside Lunch hot dog stand on Main Street for two years, later leasing it out for three.
For three winters in the 1950s, Bud and Emma took their family to the Orlando, Fla., area where Bud worked at the Benway Racetrack, training horses. It was an adventure they never forgot. Emma went back to work for the telephone company in 1960 when her girls were all in school, working split shifts or nights to be home for her girls after school.
Emma belonged to the Rebekahs in Harrison and also the Harrison Democratic Party. She enjoyed antiquing, going to yard sales, and having yard sales in her barn, “Em’s Palace” on Main Street.
Emma and Bud divorced in 1970.
When the Norway telephone office closed, Emma went to work in Portland at AT&T Communications where she took training for new and updated systems. She made many new friends in Portland and worked there until her retirement in 1984. She then moved back to her home in Harrison, sold it, and moved to South Paris, Maine, and enjoyed happy times with old and new friends. She continued to enjoy antiquing and yard saleing up into her 90s.
She was engaged to Carlton Brown of Lovell, Maine, and they enjoyed many trips together over the years. Carlton died in 1975.
Her best times in life were spent with her family at Christmas, Thanksgiving, and at her birthday celebrations at Camp David on Long Lake in Harrison. In the early days, she enjoyed family gatherings in her front yard, watching the Old Home Days Parades.
