Eleanor Pierce

Eleanor Pierce

Eleanor Scott Dickey Pierce, of Bridgton, Maine, passed away on Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, at her home in the loving care of her family.

She was born in Boston, Mass., the daughter of Fredrick Pearson Dickey and Helen Scott Jordan. Mrs. Pierce moved to West Palm Beach, Fla., at the age of five years old with her mother. She attended her whole school life in West Palm Beach. At the age of ten she and her mother won a trip to Cuba. She loved that trip and her first taste of rum. One of her favorite spots as a young girl was the MacDonald Memorial at the Woodlawn Cemetery in West Palm Beach. It is a beautiful marble bench with a full marble statue of a woman sitting. Eleanor would cuddle up to her and talk to her as if it was her Mama. She had beautiful blonde hair and enjoyed the beach daily.

She loved the movies and, as a child, Roy Rogers was her favorite. She would be sitting in the very front row with her feet up on the railing, sucking her thumb. Her mother would have to buy a ticket and go get her daughter.

She modeled for the Biltmore Hotel, an artist’s model for the Norton Gallery and School of Art, and was a hostess for the Palm Beach Playhouse, where she met many well-known actors. She would never forget the day she was kissed by the actor George Englund. From 1953 through 1959 she traveled across the country, living in Nova Scotia, and moving back to West Palm Beach in 1959. She was an avid roller skater, winning awards. During the 1960–70s she became a semiprofessional scratch bowler, holding an average of 171, winning many awards.

In 1966 she took the family to Maine on vacation to her stepfather's camp, Moose Trail Lodge. That experience and desire for Maine never left her. After losing a son in 1974 she went to Europe for six weeks, visiting many countries. On the very last day, at the airport in France, she met her late son's idol John Wayne. When she came back from Europe, she packed up the family once more and took another vacation to Maine. In 1978, she made the decision we were all moving to Bridgton, Maine, where she bought the 1867 Victorian House. How she loved all the seasons!

Over 30 years ago she met Michael Pierce in Bridgton. In 2001 they rekindled their friendship and later married on June 21, 2002.

Eleanor is survived by her husband Michael Pierce; sons, Chester Scott Wancewicz of West Palm Beach, Fla., Stephen Roche Middleton of Conway, N. H., and Leonard William Fox of Gainesville, Fla.; five grandchildren, Chet, Samia, William, Nicole and Colby; four great-granddaughters; one stepson Joshua Pierce; and three step-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her mother and father; and son Ralph Scott Wancewicz.

Her greatest love was her family and her many wonderful cats through the years.

Family and friends may attend visitation on Friday, Nov. 1, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., at Chandler Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Bridgton. Online condolences may be shared with her family at www.chandlerfunerals.com
