Dr. Adolph Carreiro, 89
LOVELL — Dr. Adolph Carreiro, 89, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2014, at his home in Lovell, surrounded by his family. He was born in Portsmouth, R.I., the youngest child of Jose and Maria Pimental Carreiro.
Adolph served his country in the U.S. Army from Nov. 1944 to April 1946 at the 63rd Medical Field Hospital as a surgical technician. Following the war, Adolph earned a BS in biology at Providence College in 1949, a MS degree from University of Kentucky in 1950, and his DDS from Columbia University in 1954. He became a member of the William Jarvie Society for Dental Research in 1953 and served as secretary. In 1974, Adolph completed a fellowship in Anesthesiology from Boston University.
After graduating from dental school, Adolph returned to Portsmouth, R.I. with his wife Jane "Broscious" to raise their family, and opened the town's first dental practice. While residing in Portsmouth, he was also active in town government and civic organizations. Upon retirement in 1984, he fulfilled a dream of owning a farm in Maine. He enjoyed gardening, woodworking, sailing, skiing and was an avid reader.
Adolph was predeceased by a son, Robert Andrew Carreiro and his wife Jane Carreiro. He is survived by his children, sons Joel Carreiro of Lovell, and Peter and his wife Kathy Carreiro of Poland, Ohio; and his two daughters Ann Gamwell and her husband Scott of Fryeburg, and Ellen Botelho and her husband Richard of Coventry, R.I.; six grandchildren, Melissa, Tara and Anna Gamwell, Nicolina and Andrew Botelho, and Erin Carreiro. He is also survived by his loyal chocolate lab, Molly.
A graveside service will be held at North Lovell Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Fryeburg Rescue, P.O. Box 177, Fryeburg, ME 04037.
