Deputies save choking child

RAYMOND — Lifesaving measures taken by three Cumberland County Sheriff’s deputies saved a Raymond boy, who was choking.

At about 9:47 p.m. on Saturday, June 4, deputies were advised by the Cumberland County Regional Communication Center (CCRCC) of an 11-year-old boy in Raymond with a full obstruction (choking) and was not breathing.

Deputy Christian Stickney was the first on scene at approximately 9:51 p.m. He was directed to a rear bedroom in the residence, where he located the boy on the floor. Deputy Stickney discovered the boy was a blueish color and flailing his arms and body around. He was initially able to speak to Deputy Stickney. He was saying, “Get it out” as he was sticking his fingers deep into his mouth.

Deputy Daniel Place arrived on scene at approximately 9:53 p.m. and was obtaining information from the adults on scene when the boy suddenly went completely limp and stopped breathing. Deputy Stickney checked for a pulse and could not find one. Deputy Stickney started CPR while Deputy Place retrieved a CPR mask from his cruiser. CPR was effective. The boy began to gasp, and he had a pulse. At this point, he was partially “awake.”

At approximately 9:57 p.m., Deputy Tyler Leach arrived on scene. Shortly after Deputy Leach’s arrival, the boy again went limp, stopped breathing, and had no pulse. The deputies began performing CPR. Deputy Stickney performed compressions, while Deputy Leach stabilized his head and opened his airway. Deputy Place administered breaths to the boy. They continued CPR for about four minutes until he had a pulse and was partially conscious.

The first Raymond rescue personnel arrived on scene at approximately 10:01 p.m. The deputies continued to assist rescue personnel until the victim was loaded into the ambulance and transported to the hospital.

The next day, it was learned that the victim was being treated at the hospital and is making a full recovery.

It should be noted that when this call came into the Cumberland County Regional Communication Center, Raymond Rescue was already busy on another call for service and the ability of other Raymond EMS personnel to respond was limited. Raymond Rescue requested assistance from Casco Rescue and Windham Rescue to assists with this medical call in Raymond.

The parents of the child have asked all three deputies to stop by at some point in the near future to speak with and introduce themselves to the 11-year-old child.

Each deputy will be receiving a “Life Saving Award” at a later date.
