STANDISH — Bennett Norton Jr., 90, died peacefully on Tuesday, April 7, 2015, at Mercy Hospital after a brief illness.

He was born in Portland, on Sept. 28, 1924, the son of Bennett and Christine Norton Sr., and graduated in 1942 from South Portland High School. He is a 1943 graduate of Maine Maritime Academy, after which he sailed for Mystic Steamship Company on the Liberty Ship, The Hannibal Hamlin. He is a veteran of World War II.

Bennett was employed by Portland Pipe Line for 33 years, from where he has been retired for many years. Until recent years, he enjoyed biking, making wood crafts, helping other property owners in Wards Cove on the shores of Sebago Lake, working his wood pile, and volunteering many hours for the Sebago Center Community Church in Sebago.

Bennett was predeceased by his first wife Adrienne; second wife Nancy; son Eric; his sisters Jean Norton, Joan Stanford and Susanne Earle.

He is survived by his son Joel Norton of Westbrook; stepdaughter Susan Cassidy of Standish and Calais; stepson Randall Compton of Sebago; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours will be held at the Sebago Center Community Church, 403 Bridgton Road (Route 107) in Sebago from 1 to 2 p.m., prior to the funeral service, which will take place at 2 p.m., also at the church, on Sunday, April 12, 2015.

A lakeside service at Wards Cove, Sebago Lake, will be held in late August in memory of Ben and his sister, Susanne, who passed away on March 4, 2015. Time and date for that service will be announced later in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Sebago Center Community Church, PO Box 212, Sebago, ME 04029.
