Sean Mulcahy

Sean Mulcahy

Sean Mulcahy, 58, of Westbrook, Maine, passed away gently surrounded by his loving siblings early on a soft Saturday morning, September 21, 2024, after an intrepid battle with illness.

Born on June 24, 1966, in Portland, Maine, Sean was the cherished son of Robert and Marilyn Mulcahy. Growing up in a lively household with three brothers, one sister, and four close male cousins — sports were the order of the day in Topsfield or Andover, Mass. Sean was known for his sharp wit, compassion, and remarkable toughness.

A strong athlete and a great teammate, he excelled on the soccer field at Masconomet High School, known for its winning soccer teams of which Sean was an integral part of. He continued to pursue his passion at Bridgton Academy, where his determination and sportsmanship left a lasting impact. Sean later studied Business at the University of Southern New Hampshire while balancing multiple jobs, including a beloved role at The Danvers Butchery, where his work ethic and friendly demeanor endeared him to customers. He then embarked on a successful corporate career, enjoying a 25-year tenure at Verizon in the SuperPages business office in South Portland, where his professionalism and dedication built lasting relationships.

Returning to Maine brought Sean unexpected joy, especially as he embraced sailing on Sebago Lake, racing as crew with his sister and brother-in-law. Despite being new to the sport, his passion and competitive spirit flourished, leading him to work part-time with their company, Sebago Sailing, after retiring. He got a kick out of sharing his butchery talents and music selections at BBQs with his sister, brother-in-law and Bridgton friends, or playing darts and boating with his close friends in Gray, on Crystal Lake. Despite never marrying and being fiercely independent, he’d often spend time with beloved high school friends and immensely enjoyed the company of their families, watching their kids grow. They all loved “Uncle Sean.”

An avid music lover with a particular fondness for blues and funky 70s tunes, Sean was also a voracious reader who immersed himself in non-fiction, especially true crime, war history and Boston gang culture. He admired Boston Herald columnist Howie Carr, whom he had the pleasure of meeting, and recently discovered a love for Maine fiction authors like Gerry Boyle. He shared a quirky penchant for off-beat comedian Phil Hendrie with his friends and loved the Art Bell character's wacky podcast.

Sean was a proud and private guy and will be remembered for his resilience, quick humor, and love for his friends and family.

He is survived by his brothers, Paul of Derry, N.H., Mark of Portsmouth, N.H., and Liam of New Hampshire; his sister, Maura (Mulcahy) Seymour and her husband of Maine; several cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, several cousins, aunties and uncles and friends. Known affectionately as "Seanny Mul," "Seano" or simply Sean, his departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of his family and friends. His life was a blessing, and although he has moved on, he is now reunited with those he missed dearly and cherished.

A Catholic Mass to honor Sean’s life will be held at St. Maximilian Kolbe Catholic Church on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 11 a.m., with a Celebration of Life to follow, details to be announced at the Mass.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Read ME at The Maine Humanities Council, in honor of Sean’s passion for reading.

With love Seanny — “May the road rise to meet you, and the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm on your face and the rains fall softly on your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you gently in the palm of his hand.” — Dia dhuit
