Darryl J. Hunt
Darryl J. Hunt, 61, of Naples, passed away on August 15, 2024, at home surrounded by his loving family, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Darryl was born on April 22, 1963, to Ralph and Eileen Hunt. He graduated from Lake Region High School in 1981, after which he spent time working for Lake
Region Lumber and as an inspection mechanic for Rudy’s Garage in Bridgton. Pursuing his love of mechanics, Darryl became a millwright working at several lumber mills while attending school to become a planer technician. After
furthering his education, he chose to work at Black Mountain Lumber in Windham.
In 1985, Darryl met the love of his life, Barbara Lewis, who he later married in 1987. Together, they had three beautiful daughters, Jennifer, Ashley and Angela, who were the pride of his life.
In the following years, Darryl partnered with his brother, Douglas, in what would become the family masonry business, D&D Masonry. For 35-plus years, Darryl and Douglas built a legacy together — working on such projects as the Merry Garden at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Bridgton, the stone fireplace at the Colonial Mast Campground’s pool, the stone piers, walls, and dugouts on the baseball field of Bridgton Academy, as well as the dugouts at the Legion baseball field and the fields at Poland High School.
Darryl put the skills he learned through his work to use at home, building Wiley Road Kennels for his wife, Barbara. He also built the family home — doing the framing, electrical, plumbing, drywall, and even digging his own leach field and well himself. When the Hunt’s opened their hearts to three res- cue horses, Darryl built a beautiful barn for them from scratch using lumber milled from his own property.
Throughout the years, Darryl worked during the off seasons at Shawnee Peak Ski Resort where he made snow, worked lift maintenance, groomed the trials, and serviced the Piston Bullies. There was truly nothing he couldn’t do. In 2019, Darryl retired from masonry and joined his brother working for Knights Hill Association, where he got his pool operator’s license and became a Class 2 Water Operator for their water system. He made a huge impact improving the water system before he had to leave due to his illness.
Darryl’s passions in life were his family, building things, and fixing things. He loved working with his hands. Darryl was a self-made man who never met a challenge he wouldn’t face. He enjoyed ice fishing, motorcycling, gardening and cooking for his family. Raising and taking care of animals from dogs, chickens, to horses was one of his many joys.
Darryl made many lifelong friends in his personal and professional life due to his kind, generous and loving nature, always willing to lend a helping hand.
He is loved by his wife Barbara; daughters Jennifer, Ashley, and Angela Hunt. His twin brother Douglas Hunt (Linda), sister Lynette Gillissen (Neil), sister Debra Cartwright (James), many nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
Darryl was predeceased by his parents Ralph and Eileen Hunt.
Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation from 11 a.m. to 1p.m., Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024, at the Hall Funeral Home in Casco followed by a memorial service beginning at 1 p.m. Following the service the celebration of Darryl’s life will continue at the American Legion Post #155 in Naples.
