Elaine Smith
Elaine (Little) Smith, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died March 7, 2022, at home with her family by her side, after a long battle with Parkinson Disease.
Elaine was born in Harrison, Maine, on September 30, 1936, to Doris (Burnham) and Hartley Little. Their family home on Route 35 was secondary to the summer cottage on a lakeside wood lot on Long Lake, which he subsequently sold parcels of, known as Little Cove. It was there that the Little
family met another family with the last name of Smith — how Elaine met her future husband.
Elaine attended the one-room Lewis School until it closed, then the Harrison Village schools in Harrison. She graduated from Bridgton High School on June 9, 1955, then married the love of her life, Gerald Smith, on Saturday, June 11, 1955.
Elaine and Gerry began their married life at Fort Bliss, Tex., then after military service, they pursued his job opportunities as a civil engineer. By 1959, they had settled in Bethel Park, Pa., where their first child, Angela Elaine was born. They continued to move for Gerry’s career, establishing a home in Beaconsfield, Quebec, where, in 1967 Valerie Ann was born. After leaving Canada, they lived in Lincoln, Maine, before moving to Cape Elizabeth in 1973. During all of those years, Elaine and the girls would spend their summers in their chalet in Little Cove, while Gerry commuted. Throughout their many moves, Elaine established a reputation among many friends as an extremely kind, loving lady.
While attending Bridgton High School, Elaine excelled in all of her home economics courses. She personified the term “homemaker” with how she provided a home in every way for her husband and girls — it was her career. Creativity in sewing, cooking and being able to make things as inexpensively as possible were her strong suits. She could improvise sewing patterns and create various craft items from scratch.
Elaine was a supportive parent to her girls in every sense of the term. She attended all of their sporting and artistic events throughout the girls’ schooling in Cape Elizabeth.
She socialized through Newcomers Club, Mad Money Investment Club, and bridge, and with Gerry, a Friday night bowling league. She also played tennis and exercised.
Wherever she lived, Elaine was active in her church, serving as Sunday school superintendent in a large church in Pennsylvania. In Harrison, she served as president of the Harrison Historical Society for several years and served on the Editorial Board, writing the Harrison Bicentennial History.
Throughout their lives, they always wanted to return to their roots in Harrison. In 1987, they moved into the chalet and started plans to build their retirement home. In 1994, they moved into their dream home, affectionately known as Smith Point, which was designed and built by Gerry with Elaine’s help. They were living their retirement years there when Elaine was diagnosed with Parkinson Disease in 2014, yet she never let the disease take away the joy of being with her family.
The family would like to thank Home Instead, First Light Home Care, and especially Beacon Hospice for their amazing support and care for Elaine.
Elaine is survived by her husband of almost 67 years; brother Norton Little of Harrison; sister Kathleen Rousseau of Stuart, Fla.; daughter Angela Pearson and husband Carl of Cape Elizabeth; daughter, Valerie Smith of Scarborough; grandchildren Casey Pearson of Wilton Manors, Fla., Bradley Pearson and spouse Kristina of Cape Elizabeth, Rose Punsky of Scarborough and Harrison Punsky of Cape Elizabeth; and great-granddaughters McKenzie LaRose Pearson and Aubrie Elaine Pearson, both of Cape Elizabeth.
Elaine was predeceased by her parents and a brother, Leslie Little, all formerly of Harrison.
A memorial service will be held July 30, 2022, at the United Parish Congregational Church in Harrison at 11 a.m.
