Dangerous building saved by the bell

CASCO — A building that was on track to be demolished on the town’s dime might get a Hail Mary reprieve.
The structure is located at 388 Roosevelt Trail. A few weeks ago, the Casco Board of Selectmen held a public hearing and determined that it was a dangerous building, and that it would be demolished.
A recent turn of events may leave the building standing — at least for a while longer.
The mortgage holder contacted Casco Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) John Wiesemann, according to Casco Town Manager Tony Ward.
“They cannot go into it until the foreclosure is finalized, which is March 17. They want to do an assessment of the property to see if they can rehab it or can demo it,” Ward said.
“They are asking that we don’t put out an RFP for a demolition until they have time to do this.”
This information was shared with the Casco board during its regular meeting on Tuesday night.
The board was fine with waiting to see if the mortgage holder will take-over the responsibility of the structure.
“We have been working on this for years now, what is another month,” Selectman Bob MacDonald said.
