Gordon F. Knight

Gordon Knight

WATERFORD — Gordon F. Knight, 92, died in the early morning of Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at Stephens Memorial Hospital in Norway.

He was born in Otisfield, Maine on February 4, 1929, to father Adelbert Knight and mother Alice Lamb Knight, who raised him there.

Gordon graduated from Bridgton Academy in the class of 1948, where he met his bride-to-be Virginia M. Gammon of Waterford. They married on July 9, 1951, and enjoyed 70 and a half years together, something that was recognized by the state Legislature and in front-page news of an area newspaper last summer. Gordon had entered the Army with fellow BA graduate Phil Denison and got home on leave just long enough to get married and then returned to the Army and a tour of duty in Europe.

After his time in the service, he worked for his brother-in-law Bourdon Scribner driving logging trucks and maintaining the logging equipment. Next, Gordon worked for A.W. Walker, and then Ripley and Fletcher, all in South Paris. He worked many years repairing John Deere tractors and equipment and went to many John Deere training classes that made his skills legendary. Many service calls with his wife and kids in tow were made in his gray Thunderbird that visited many hay fields in western Maine, including fields in Auburn that are now shopping malls. One morning Gordon got to work and found a pickup truck that towed a hay baler in for repairs all the way from Canada. The lady farmer got advice to drive miles and miles to South Paris and found Gordon to quickly fix the problem so hay production could resume in Canada.

Gordon and Virginia spent over 30 years square dancing all over New England and are former co-presidents of the Swinging Bears Square Dance Club in South Paris. Gordon and Virginia loved taking trips to Cabbage Island for lobster with the Harrison Recreation Department and their great lunches at the fire station. Camping was great fun with Virginia’s sister Priscilla and husband Lowell who were great friends with Gordon. They made trips by snowmobile around Maine, boat trips to Nova Scotia, many camping trips around Maine, and visits with Priscilla and Lowell in Florida. They also enjoyed camping on their own property in Waterford.

Gordon was predeceased by his parents and sister Olive Shane.

He is survived by his wife Virginia and sons George, Richard, and Stephen of Waterford, and by son Michael and his wife Kathy of Gardiner. Grandchildren include Selena Nadeau of Litchfield, Rachel Durkee of South Portland, and Travis Nowicki of Buxton. Great-grandchildren include Savannah Poulin and Lilly Nadeau of Litchfield. Great-great-grandchildren number just one, Neva Buteau of Litchfield. Also, his sister’s children, Connie Arnott in Florida, David Scribner of Tennessee, and Randall Scribner in Harrison, Maine.

A graveside service will be held in the spring.
