FA Senior Athlete Spotlight: Eddie Thurston

Eddie Thurston

Student-Athlete: Eddie Thurston

Residence:  Fryeburg

Year in School: Senior

Parents: Sue and Fuzzy Thurston

Sports you play: Football, hockey, baseball

Q1. How long have you played each? As long as I can remember! I can’t remember life without sports year-round! I was on skates and skis by 2! Kindergarten was the formal start of some version of them all!

Q2. Why did you choose these sports?Sports make me push myself physically and mentally and I love to compete.

Q3. What do you enjoy most about these sports?  I like the physical contact of my sports and I have always gone toward team sports.

Q4. How has competing in sports changed you as a person (give an example)? Sports have taught me a lot! My teammates are now my closest friends. I have always felt that your team is only as strong as your weakest link so we push each other to not be that link.

Q5. During this period of Covid-19, what has been the most difficult adjustment (and why)? I hate Covid-19.  Not being able to compete as a senior is something I would never have dreamed of. At times, I have felt like all the work my teammates and I have done in the last two years to better ourselves has been wasted, but I know we have put ourselves in a better position as athletes.

Q6. What is your favorite sports memory? My favorite sports memories are the competitions against Lake Region. We all know each other, and in some cases, we are teammates in hockey so the games are always about the bragging rights.

Q7. What is your most disappointing sports memory? Losing in the State Championship football game.

Q8. How has sports prepared you for your future (be it career path or approach to life)? Sports, especially through Covid-19, have taught me that nothing in life is a given. You have to work hard not knowing what lies ahead and you can only hope that it will all work out in the future

Q9. Name a coach who has made a difference in your life and in what way?  Coach Jones has made a difference to me. His unique coaching style is one like no other coach I have had. He teaches his athletes how to be great people and great athletes. That is not an easy balance to teach with high school kids. I pushed myself to meet his unspoken expectations.

Q10. What are your future goals?  I plan to attend Bridgton Academy for a prep year and then attend a college to pursue a career in either environmental science or law enforcement. I plan to play hockey at BA and hopefully play in college.
