Upcoming area fishing derbies

DENMARK

The ninth annual Denmark Rod & Gun Club Ice Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6 from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Scaled down due to Covid-19, the derby still provides for great prizes and memories to be made. Ponds open to derby are: Moose Pond (entire pond), Hancock Pond (entire pond), Beaver Pond, Little Pond, Sand Pond, Granger Pond, Pickerel Pond, Pleasant Pond and Horseshoe Pond. All fish entered must be caught from these bodies of water on the day of the derby. Weigh-in will be conducted in parking lot of the Denmark Town Office. Weigh Master has the right to inspect fish after weighing. Heaviest fish of any species wins. In case of a tie, the longest fish wins. 

Adult prizes: First Prize $500; Second Prize $300; and Third Prize $200.There will be door prizes, raffles, trophies, etc.

Kids’ Derby is for children 12 and under. Cash prize of $20 and trophies for the heaviest perch, bass, cusk, trout and pickerel. 

Registration ends at 10 a.m. day of the derby. Weigh-in starts at 2 p.m. No early weigh-ins allowed. Must be in line for weigh-in by 4 p.m. to weigh your fish.

Registration is online only (Eventbrite.com). Raffle tickets sold online only.

Children’s lifetime hunting/fishing license will be awarded to one lucky child that is entered with a paid adult. 

Door prizes will be mailed to winners.

LOVELL 

The Lovell Lions Club will hold their fifth annual Norris Bennett Memorial Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday, Feb. 14, on Kezar Lake in Lovell. 

The entry fee is $25. The prize is $1,000 for the biggest togue. There will be a $50 prize for children 12 years old and under for the biggest fish. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. 

Registration begins at 5:30 a.m. at Pleasant Point Beach in Center Lovell. Weigh-in will be at 4 p.m. (sharp) at Pleasant Point Beach. For pre-registration or questions, contact Colin Micklon at 207-925-1075 or at colin@micktree.com.

A portion of the money raised during the derby is dedicated to scholarships for graduating Fryeburg Academy seniors.

The derby once again falls on Free Fishing Weekend in the State of Maine (no fishing license required).

Organizers want to remind all those participating to be responsible and careful on the ice at all times. Always use extreme caution. Please come and enjoy the fun! Maybe you will catch the prize fish! Or at least see one!

HARRISON

The fifth annual Family Ice Fishing Derby, sponsored by the Harrison Recreation Department, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cost is $10 for those ages 1-15 and $15 for those ages 16-plus. 

Age divisions: 1-5, 6-11, 12-15, 16-plus. 

Species of fish: Trout (all species), salmon, white perch, bass, pickerel and cusk.

Top three fish in each division will earn a prize. You must be registered for the derby to win. Register online (go to the Town of Harrison website and look under Recreation) or at the Harrison Town Office. Registration day of the derby until 9 a.m.

Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be no awards ceremony. Winners will be contacted to pick up their prize. Thanks to Line X of Augusta, the first place adult prize will be $300.
