What’s in store for the Class of 2020?

Like many senior students, Rebekah Knights wonders how her Lake Region High School career will end.

She penned the following poem capturing what the Class of 2020 has endured.

“I wasn’t going to share this until someone told me I had to. The seniors everywhere need to know they are not alone, and other people need to know how we feel so that we may stand together in this time as we face this virus together,” Rebekah said via an e-mail to The News.  “And yes, there have been many videos and other statements said about this, but I believe the more there is said the better.”

Here is to us

to 12 years gone by

to the first day of school nervous and scared

to making new friends and losing old ones

to hard work and memories

to the times we thought we would never pass a class or stay back

to the first and last day of high school

to our jobs and businesses that closed

to the prom we may never have

to our graduation, and possibly not ever knowing what it would be like to walk across that stage knowing we made it

Here’s to the time we lost

To the people whose lives were taken

To maybe losing our last summer and possibly not ever going back to school

Here is to hope, that we will get our last prom, that we will walk across that stage as our family and friends shout our name and cheer us on, that we will get to be with our friends as much as we can and enjoy summer before we are told its time. 

It’s time to grow up.

To finding strength we didn’t know we had.

Here’s to the class that will go down in history.

And we’ll get to say we did it. We made it. Together.

Good time to take on a project

While many teens might be passing some time playing video games, Colin Murphy of Bridgton decided to use of the downtime caused by the corona virus outbreak to take on a home improvement project.

He built a 9-foot by 6-foot table for his room, which he designed. A student at Baxter Academy for Technology and Science in Portland, Colin was able to use the project as part of his learning-at-home.

With a little assistance (he did 99% of the labor), Colin cut, glued, drilled and used screws, sanded, stained, applied polyurethane and assembled the table.

After some room re-arranging, Colin has a few other projects on his mind to constructively pass this unexpected “home time.”

Student Notes

Lauren Jakobs of Naples earned a spot on the 2020 Assumption (Worcester, Mass.) Women’s Lacrosse team. Though the spring season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jakobs, Class of 2022, competed in the first three games of the season.  She recorded five ground balls and caused six turnovers. Last year in nine games, Jakobs scored three goals and had six assists.

“Our team worked extremely hard this offseason and that commitment was evident in the early, and successful, part of the season, which understandably came to an abrupt, untimely finish,” said Abbey Capobianco-Simone, who is in her 10th season as head coach. “Our team is heartbroken, as we showed much promise, and had beautiful team chemistry. They are the most competitive, driven, joyful group I have ever had the opportunity to coach. I am confident our players will continue to commit themselves to their studies while continuing to develop their skills and enhance their work ethic that has made this an elite program. Although a shortened season, I am incredibly proud of what our team accomplished, and cannot thank our seniors for all their hard-work, sacrifice and dedication to our program. They left their mark as Greyhounds and we cannot wait to be together again.”

The Hounds began the 2020 season with a 3-0 record, before the cancellation of the remaining games on their schedule. They kicked off the season with a 17-7 Northeast-10 victory over American International College and went on to beat Southern Connecticut State 19-6 and Molloy 10-4

Last season, the Greyhounds won a school-record 14 games and finished the season ranked 17th in the nation, its highest ranking ever to conclude a season. The team was picked fifth in the 2020 Northeast-10 Conference Preseason Coaches’ Poll to start the season. 

St. Lawrence Dean’s List

Hannah Frye of Brownfield and Aidan Hagerty of Denmark have been selected for inclusion on the Dean’s List for academic achievement during the fall 2019 semester at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y.

Hannah is a member of the Class of 2021 and is majoring in environmental studies.

Aidan is a member of the Class of 2023.
