As a freshman, Zach Vogel was “one of the most consistent skiers, racing in the number two position” for the Lake Region boys’ alpine team, according to Coach Scott Davis.

At the Class B state championships held at Black Mountain in Rumford, Zach placed 11th in the giant slalom and 13th in the slalom.

“Zach’s performance helped give us enough team points to capture the State ‘B’ runner-up plaque,” Coach Davis said. “If there is snow on the hill at Shawnee Peak, you will usually find him turning and jumping off most any bump he can find. Great job, Zach!”

In recognition of his strong work ethic, determination, commitment and good sportsmanship, Zach is this week’s Boosters and Hancock Lumber “Player of the Week.” Each week, a Lake Region athlete is recognized for his/her dedication (does more than what is asked), work ethic, coachability and academic good standing. Recipients receive a specially-designed t-shirt, sponsored by Hancock Lumber.

Q. Why did you choose to race alpine? For the challenge. I grew up on skis and wanted to try racing.

Q. What is the most difficult part racing? Not falling and not hurting yourself.

Q. What do you enjoy the most about the sport? The challenge and having fun with my friends, making new friends.

Q. What do you feel you need to work on and why? I feel like I have to be more in control so I can help my team more.

Q. Why is teamwork important? If we all do well, then we will win the meet.

Q. What is the biggest impact your coach(es) have had on you? My coaches helped me get better at skiing. Ski racing isn’t only an individual sport, it is a team sport.

Q. How do you want people to view you as an athlete? Hard working, dedicated and a leader.

Q. Ten years from now, when you look back on your high school sports career, what do you think you will remember most? Having fun with my teammates at the top of the course and hanging out with my teammates at States.
