GIRLS’ SCOREBOARD
Lakers 33, Cape 31: On most nights, Elle Hall and Bella Russo make a difference by their hustle, be it fighting for a rebound or playing tight defense.
Fighting for their playoff lives Tuesday night, the Lakers got big hoops from both Hall and Russo to upset Cape Elizabeth. Russo knocked down a critical 3-pointer — her only hoop of the game — to tie the contest and Hall scored the game winner with 1:18 left as the Lakers (7-10) edged the Capers (7-1) at Nutting Gym.
The Lakers went up 7-5 in the first, but Cape built a 17-14 lead at the break. The Lakers won the third quarter, 10-7, setting up a furious finish. Shauna Hancock paced the LR attack with 10 points, including a trey that tied the game at 24 in the third quarter. Hall finished with 6 points, while Melissa Mayo (trey) and Shelby Sheldrick (trey) each had 5 points. Other scorers were: Liz Smith 4 and Russo 3.
Lakers 50, Poland 29: Summing up why the Lakers (6-10) rolled past Poland (4-12) by 21 points last Friday night on the road, Coach Paul True used just two words — effort and heart. An energized Laker squad put forth a complete effort as eight players scored, led by guard Shauna Hancock’s game-high 13 points (a trey and six from the charity stripe).
The win snapped a four-game losing skid. Liz Smith chipped in 10 points, while freshman guard Melissa Mayo connected for three 3-pointers for 9 points. Elle Hall added 7, Shelby Sheldrick 6 (pair of treys), Nevaeh Stewart 4 and Bella Russo 1.
Heal Watch: With one game to go, the Lakers are ranked #9 in Class B South just two points out of the final playoff spot. LR closes with top-ranked Freeport (13-4), making this game their playoff. Win and they are in.
York 67, Raiders 34: The Wildcats sported too much firepower for Fryeburg Academy to match as four players hit for double-digits last Friday to hand the Raiders a lopsided defeat.
FA trailed by just five after the first eight minutes, but then York (11-5) poured it on with a 23-9 run that the Raiders were unable to recover from, falling to 3-13. Merys Carty had a strong night, scoring a team-high 15 points with a pair of 3-pointers (the FA senior guard was just one point off game-high honors). Sierra Lyman scored 7 points (including a trey) while Kaylee Emery had 6, Kayrin Johnson 4 and Camden Jones 2 points.
Gray-NG 56, Raiders 26: Tuesday night, the Raiders started well, trailing the host Patriots just 13-12. But then, the Pats found their rhythm, going on a 23-6 run to take control. FA struggled offensively in the second half, scoring just 8 points.
