LOVELL — With the Lovell Rec Fields covered with a thin layer of snow, the annual Gasping Gobbler race shifted Saturday to a down-and-back run on Smarts Hill Road.

The change almost caught eventual winner Alfie Walker of Fryeburg off guard. He was prepared to make a turn and head back toward the finish when runner-up Luke Fernandez of Watertown, Mass., told him to keep running — the turnaround was farther down the road.

“Thanks for telling me,” Walker said after the two finished the race.

Walker won the race in 12 minutes, 6.4 seconds while Fernandez was second in 13:19.5.

Diane Bessey of Old Orchard Beach was the first female and third overall finisher in 14:51.8. Kaitlyn DiRenzo of Watertown, Mass., was fourth in 15:28.2, while Colson Thurlow of Fryeburg was fifth in 16:39.1.

Turkeys went to the top male and female finishers, as well as Stephen Dowling of Kearsarge, N.H., who was the first walker, checking in at 24:25.1, and Al Sabaka of Bridgton, who earned the “middle of the pack” honors in 25:20.4.
