Short takes: Nataluk places sixth at States; Lakers fall in football playoff
CROSS-COUNTRY: Competing in a field of 103, Fryeburg Academy sophomore Alanna Nataluk ran a 20:46 in the 5,000-meter race on Saturday to place sixth at the Class B State Cross-Country championships held at Twin Brook in Cumberland. Junior Lila Gaudrault of Cape Elizabeth posted the winning time of 19:19.
Overall in the state, Alanna was 31st out of 297 finishers. She just missed qualifying for the New England Championships by eight seconds — six places.
“Alanna should be one of the top runners in the state next year,” Raider Coach Bill Reilly said.
FOOTBALL: Leavitt junior quarterback Wyatt Hathaway stung Lake Region early and often during last Friday night’s Class C quarterfinal playoff game, passing for four touchdowns (21, 46, 23 and 7 yards) and rushing for another as the Hornets lead 36-0 after a quarter. Leavitt pulled their starters in the second half, and captured a 42-6 victory. Hathaway was 7-of-10 for 145 yards, and he did throw an interception, hauled in by LR’s Isaac Rawson. The Laker junior also figured in on the offensive side, catching a gadget pass from Ethan McMurray resulting in a 59-yard touchdown in the third quarter. LR turned the ball over three times (2 interceptions and a fumble). The Lakers finished the season with a 3-5 mark. The top-ranked Hornets improve to 9-0 and host fifth-ranked Freeport (7-1) in the semifinals Friday night.
GOLF: Noah Duprey of Lake Region and Yujia “Nora” Zhai of Fryeburg Academy were two of 12 named to the Western Maine Conference Class B Golf All-Conference list.
