Eugene ‘Harlan’ Bartlett, 80
DENMARK — Eugene “Harlan” Bartlett, 80, of Denmark, died late Tuesday evening, Aug. 13, 2019, at his home in Denmark, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on, May 28, 1939, in North Conway, N.H., a son of Nelson and Alegra (McAllister) Bartlett. After graduating from Fryeburg Academy, he married Martha Gerry on Feb. 20, 1960.
They lived in Connecticut until 1964 as Harlan worked at Pratt & Whitney. They returned to Maine and settled in Denmark where, alongside his brother Waine, they ran the Village Store. Harlan worked in the store in all capacities for 14 years. He will be fondly remembered as the butcher and for having the best wheel cheese.
In 1979 he started the Moose Pond Harbor Marina and, although he supposedly retired years ago, could still be found puttering until last year.
He was a charter member of the Denmark Lions Club, Fire Department, and Snowmobile Club, and was also active in the Masons and as a Shriner.
Harlan loved to deer hunt, restore antique cars, and he time spent fishing with his wife, Martha, who predeceased him on March 16, 2000.
He was loved by his three children, Jeffrey Bartlett of Denmark, Jolene Snow and her husband Alfred of Denmark, and Jerry Bartlett and his wife Diane of Rapid City, S.D.; dear companion and significant other, Marilyn Bennett of North Fryeburg; eight grandchildren, Jen, Craig, David, Lyndsay, Brittanie, Heather, Rick and Tiffany; 11 great-grandchildren; siblings, Carlene Colbath of Conway, N.H., Waine Bartlett of Belfast, Sandra Lacy of Rochester, N.H., Lindon Bartlett of Brownfield; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by siblings, Edward, Ronald “Buddy,” Lloyd, and Reginald “Reggie.”
A memorial service for Harlan will be celebrated at 2 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 22, in the Expo Building at the Fryeburg Fairgrounds. Gifts in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society.
