WINDHAM — Charles R. “Sonny” Enman Sr., 89, of Windham, joined his wife Theresa on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2016.

He was born in Portland, Sept. 11, 1927, the son of the late Edward and Janetta (Casley) Enman.

He grew up in Portland and attended local area schools before joining the Merchant Marines. Upon being honorably discharged, he married the “love of his life,” Theresa C. DeMerritt, on May 12, 1952. They spent 63 years together before her passing on Feb. 28, 2016. Charles deeply missed his wife in his remaining days.

Sonny worked for several Portland businesses before his career of 40 years with Maine Central Railroad. He retired from the Portland Yard Terminal at Rigby Yard in 1977 due to health issues.

Sonny enjoyed the horse racing at Scarborough Downs, playing cards with family, boating and fixing the family’s vehicles. He especially enjoyed trips to Prince Edward Island, Foxwoods, Atlantic City and Oxford Casino with his wife.

Charles was predeceased by his sister, Marjorie Porter; and his brother, Albert Enman, with whom he shared many adventures.

He is survived by his five children, Joyce Nielsen, of Windham, Janet Cordier of Standish, Charles R. Enman Jr. of Gorham, Joanne Palanza of Naples and John Enman of Windham; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; as well as his nephews and their families.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service Thursday, Dec. 29, 2016, at 10 a.m. at the Wilde Memorial Chapel in Evergreen Cemetery, 672 Stevens Avenue, Portland.
