Richard J. Mooney, 69
SOUTH PORTLAND — Richard J. Mooney, 69, died Sunday, Oct. 23, 2016, at his home after a six-year battle with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). He was surrounded by his family.
Born in New Rochelle, N.Y., Rich was the son of James W. and Jane D. Mooney. He graduated from Briarcliff High School in Briarcliff, N.Y., in 1966, where he excelled in basketball and baseball. In 1971, Rich graduated from Pace University in New York, earning a degree in business administration. After stints as a taxi driver and house painter in New York, Rich found his calling in accounting.
He became a certified public accountant, beginning his career with Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Company in Portland. Rich was the chief financial officer for several Portland companies including Ram Management, Northeast Insurance and Bancroft Construction.
In 1988, he began a private practice, Mooney and Rathmell, PC, specializing in tax preparation and small-business consulting.
Rich enjoyed traveling, reading, fishing and playing golf, tennis and bridge, but his favorite times were spent with family, whether traveling to Europe, reading to his grandchildren or waterskiing at the family cottage on Pleasant Lake in Casco. In his spare time, Rich volunteered with Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad, Literacy Volunteers of America, Maine Adult Education and Cape Elizabeth Little League.
Rich is survived by his wife of 45 years, Karen; his daughters, Jessica Govind of Cape Elizabeth and Jamyn Dawes of Cape Elizabeth; four grandchildren; and his brother, David Mooney of Lincolnville, R.I.
Rich was predeceased by his parents; a daughter, Krista Laurie; a brother, James; and a sister, Patricia.
Visiting hours will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 6, at Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road in South Portland.
