Lake Region weekly sports recaps

BASEBALL

Raiders 4, Lakers 3: Tucker Buzzell walked with the bases loaded as Fryeburg Academy edged the Lakers last Wednesday at the Academy.

The Lakers opened the scoring in the first inning as sophomore Tristen Chaine singled, Jordan Williams walked and Nate Smith doubled.

Hunter Day tied it up for the Raiders, and in the fifth, put his club ahead with another big hit.

With the Lakers up 3-2, Fryeburg rallied in the seventh. A base hit and walk followed by an intentional walk to Day loaded the bases. Oscar Saunders tied the game on a fielder’s choice, setting the stage for Buzzell’s game-ending walk.

“It was a great game. Fryeburg has a great group of guys and they play hard. They fought till the end, and we just came up short,” Laker Coach Randy Heath said. “Nate Smith has been the rock of this team every time that kid takes the hill. He gives us the opportunity to win. He threw a great game. It’s hard to see the team so close and come up short so many times. Our record doesn’t show just how good these guys are.”

Lakers 9, Gray-NG 1: Playing flawless defense and getting some clutch hitting from Andy Douglass (RBI double), the Lakers stunned the Patriots last Friday at home.

Jordan Williams, on the bump after off-season shoulder surgery and a long rehab stint, took control from the start and only allowed one earned run in six innings of work.

The hustle of Gunnar Harriman started off the offense with the bloop infield double. Tristen Chaine moved Harriman to third on a sacrifice bunt, and then with two outs, Douglass belted a deep double to left, scoring Harriman.

In the third inning, the Lakers put five more runs on the board with hard hits coming throughout the lineup. LR batted 10 guys in the inning to take control.

“This is the baseball team that I envisioned. These guys can really play ball if they get the bats and gloves moving. We could do damage in the playoffs if we can get in — there is still time,” Coach Heath said. “I’m hopeful and confident in this group of guys. I’m proud of the fight in them.”

SOFTBALL

Raiders 14, Lakers 1: Makayla Cooper belted a two-run home run and a two-run double to ignite a big second inning as Fryeburg rolled past Lake Region at the Academy last Wednesday.

FA took a 1-0 lead in the first as Mackenzie Buzzell singled, moved into scoring position on a Julia Quinn bunt, and scored on a Nicole Bennett base hit.

The Raiders broke the game open with eight runs in the second as 12 players went to bat. Lexi L’Heureux-Carland knocked a two-run single and Bennett whacked a two-run double.

Megan Fuller doubled and scored on a Buzzell hit in the third inning as Fryeburg plated four more runs.

The Lakers avoided the shutout in the fourth as Maddie Rock reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on an Ali Sawyer single. Sawyer also doubled as the Lakers managed six hits off Bennett. Jackie Morse had a pair of hits, while Kaylyn Lorrain and Liz Cole each singled.

Gray-NG 6, Lakers 0: The Lakers left five runners in scoring position in a loss to the Patriots at home Friday. Liz Cole recorded two hits, while Brooke Harriman and Dessi Berry each had singles.

G-NG pitcher Alie Martell struck out 11 Laker hitters.

TRACK & FIELD

At the Tri-County Clash held last Friday at Sacopee Valley in South Hiram, the Laker girls (103 points) placed third in the five-school meet just behind the host Hawks (107.5) and Fryeburg Academy (105.5).

Meanwhile, the Laker boys were second overall with 73 points, behind Sacopee 141. Some highlights:

Catherine Christiansen finished third in the impressive 400 meters. The top five girls all broke 1:05! Catherine’s time automatically qualified her for the state meet.

Dakota Stover won the 400 meters in 54.4 seconds, which provisionally qualified him for the state meet. That was a PR for Dakota as was his 100-meter time of 11.6 seconds.

Also provisionally qualifying for States was Thomas Noble in the shot put. He had a huge PR by 4.5 feet! Thomas also showed his versatility with his PR effort in the 1600 meter racewalk.

Leading the PR count was probably Matt Mayo. He had three PRs, all by significant margins (nine seconds in the 1600, seven seconds in the 800, and four seconds in the 4x400). No one works harder than Matt at practice, Coach Mark Snow said. “It looks like hard work leads to big PRs.”

Three PRs were also attained by Ethan Chadwick. His PRs were in the 400m, high jump, and 4x400.
