CUMBERLAND — It was quite a Saturday for the Fryeburg Academy girls’ cross-country team.

Behind Top 10 finishes by Anna Lastra and Emily Carty, the Raiders were the fourth best squad in Class B and 10th overall in the entire state (out of 37 schools).

Based on their finishes Lastra (fifth) and Carty (ninth), the FA duo will compete in the New England Championships on Saturday, Nov. 14 at Thetford Academy in Vermont.

Here’s how the girls finished:

Race facts: 103 finishers; FA girls #4 with 80 points (total time: 1:46:58.13); #1 Yarmouth 72 points (total time: 1:43:24.39); 13 schools competing; top six teams all from all classes qualify for the New England Championship Meet, FA was 10th overall out of 37 schools.

“All the girls, with the exception of Emily Carty, who still ran a fantastic race, had personal records on the tough Twin Brook course,” FA Coach Bill Reilly said. “It took a monumental team effort by all the girls to place as high as they did against very stiff competition.”

Then came the icing on the cake as the Raider girls were awarded the Class B Girls’ Cross-Country Sportsmanship Award by the Maine Principals’ Association.

“A very special commendation to my assistant coach, Dylan Alden, who has really been a tremendous inspiration and role model to girls in her coaching,” Coach Reilly said.

The longtime FA coach added, “I have spent 60-plus years in organized sports — either as a player or a coach — and the one thing I hold higher than anything else is honor and integrity as a code of conduct when actively engaged in a team athletic competition. When I, as a coach, see a team that I have tried to inspire win an award such as this, I feel a very deep satisfaction that maybe I am really passing on to others my passion for the sport of cross-country running. The girls have experienced an event in their lives, which can be remembered years from now, much the same way as certain sporting events in my own youth bring quiet pleasure to myself when recollected.”

On the boys’ side, Patrick Carty finished a stellar four-year varsity cross-country career at Fryeburg Academy, just missing qualifying for New Englands, finishing 12th.

“As captain, he was a team leader and role model of the highest order and will be sorely missed next season,” Coach Reilly said. “Ryan Hewes, only a sophomore, had a fine race and will be back next year to go for States again.”
