FIELD HOCKEY

Raiders 1, Kennebunk 0: Bridget Tweedie’s goal with 9:11 remaining proved to be the game-winner as the Raiders (10-3) edged Kennebunk (9-4-1) Monday.

The Raiders nearly scored earlier in the game when a drive from the right wing hit the inside of the far post and bounced away from the Kennebunk goal.

Tweedie brought the ball downfield on a breakaway and dodged three defenders before pulling right and shooting to the opposite side from the top of the circle.

Bridget Fahey blocked eight shots for Fryeburg.

Heal Watch: The Raiders are currently ranked #3 in Class B South. They were at Sacopee Valley yesterday to close out the regular season. With the top 10 teams qualifying for the playoffs, the Raiders will have a bye and then host a quarterfinal game this Wednesday, Oct. 21 against Leavitt.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Anna Lastra had a super time of 19:17, a personal record (PR) at North Yarmouth Academy last week along with Emily Carty at 19:48, both for national elite status. The Raider duo was 3-4. Winning time was 19:03.47 by Greely’s Katherine Leggat-Barr.

“This is the fastest one-two girls punch I have ever had at Fryeburg Academy,” Raider Coach Bill Reilly said.

The 3, 4 and 5 runners — Irina Norkin, Zoe Maguire and Emily Grzyb — all PRs are now shooting for sub 22s. Ella Forbes — the all-important #6 runner — is going for the 23s.

“The tough workouts —and I mean tough!!! — are now paying off for the girls’ and boys’ teams,” Coach Reilly said. “The second season now begins for both teams (this Friday is the Western Maine Conference Championships to be held at St. Joseph College in Standish). Both teams are highly-focused despite a great regular season. Their mutual goals are to go as far as they can go with no letup and perhaps end up with a ticket to the State Meet final.”

Here’s how other Raider girls finished:

  1. Irina Norkin, 22:06.92
  2. Zoe Maguire, 22:13.22

“If the boys have a shot, it will be the #5 runner who will really decide that. Seth Johnston broke 21 and continues to improve with more tough workouts to reach for a sub 19:30,” Coach Reilly added.
