Lake Region weekly recaps
BASEBALL
Greely 8, Lakers 5: Greely plated four runs in the fourth inning to extend a 2-1 lead and held off the Lakers.
After playing error-free ball, the Lakers made a bid in the their last at bat to challenge the 3-0 Rangers. LR had two players on base when Adam Butler “crushed†a drive to leftfield, but the Ranger outfielder “made one of the best catches†LR Coach Randy Heath has seen in high school ball. A run scored on the drive. The outfielder would also rob Jordan Williams of a hit, as the Rangers turned a sharp drive into a double play to end the game.
Shawn Hanson struggled on the hill, and gave way to reliever Jordan Williams, who “pitched the best I’ve seen from him,†Coach Heath said.
Gunnar Harriman had a pair of singles, while Butler and Williams each doubled.
Kennebunk 5, Lakers 4: The Rams singled up the middle, just past the outstretched glove of second baseman Andrew Douglass to score the winning run at Kennebunk.
The Lakers took an early 2-0 lead as Gunnar Harriman reached on an infield single, Adam Butler sharply singled, and Jordan Williams hit a bomb — a double — to plate a run. Damon Knight later hit a single to knock in Williams.
Kennebunk answered with two in the bottom of the third.
Lake Region scored one run in the fifth inning as Knight led off with a double then scored on two passed balls. Kennebunk answered with four hits to score two runs.
“The team has played with the best we see and put up great games. The guys are really motivated and positive even though we do not have a win yet,†Coach Heath said. “I’m proud of our guys and how they have played.â€

SOFTBALL
Lakers 6, Greely 5 in 12 innings: After six years, the Lakers finally walked off a softball diamond with a win over Greely. The Lakers snapped a long losing string to the Rangers last Wednesday with a victory in 12 innings in Naples.
Jackie Morse opened the frame with a sharply-hit ball to second base, which was bobbled. Morse’s hustle down the line paid off as she beat the throw. Kristen Huntress successfully dropped a bunt, and Greely was unable to make an accurate throw, which sailed past the first baseman. With Morse at third, the return throw to home plate was off line, allowing Morse to score the game winner.
Greely (2-2) appeared ready to continue their dominance over the Lakers by scoring four runs on four hits in the first inning.
The Lakers cut the deficit in half in the second inning as Allison Morse (walk) and Liz Cole (single) each touched home plate.
Greely regained the lead with a run in the third on a double and a Miranda Moore single.
Dessi Berry (walk), Abby Scott-Mitchell (single) and Ashley Clark (fielder’s choice) all scored in the fifth to tie the game as Allison Morse had a RBI single.
LR pitcher Ashley Clark worked out of several jams in the late innings, making big pitches when she had to while also receiving sterling defensive plays by freshman shortstop Kaylyn Lorrain and sophomore second baseman Kristen Huntress, who each gloved line drives headed for base hits. The Rangers stranded a runner at second in the eighth and a runner at third in the ninth.
Greely’s best chance to break the stalemate came in the 10th as Sarah Felkel doubled to open the inning. But, Clark induced two infield fly ball outs and ended the threat with a strikeout.
Clark allowed just five hits, one after the rocky first inning. She struck out six. LR committed two errors, while Greely had three.
Lakers 6, Sacopee 4: Ashley Clark went 2-for-3, knocked in a run and allowed just four hits while striking out five to lead the Lakers past the Hawks Monday at Naples.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first on two hits and an error, the Lakers plated a run as Abby Scott-Mitchell reached on an error, and later scored on Clark’s single.
The Hawks scored twice in the fifth on a triple, bunt and a single.
The Lakers finally broke an 0-9 streak in the sixth as Kaylyn Lorrain singled to spark a five-run rally. Clark, Perreault (bunt) and Dessi Berry each had hits.
Clark retired the Hawks in order in the seventh as rightfielder Arianna Libby snared a fly ball and managed to double up a Hawk runner at first. Clark then struck out the lead-off hitter to end the game.
Scott-Mitchell and Sawyer had hits for the Lakers, who held a 7-4 advantage. SV committed two errors, LR had three.
Kennebunk 10, Lakers 5: The Rams stopped a five-game skid Monday by scoring five times in the seventh inning to down the Lakers in Naples.
Doubles by Ally King and Sydney Waitt triggered the Ram uprising as Kennebunk sent nine players to the plate.
The Lakers took a 1-0 lead in the second as Allison Morse reached on an error and scored when Liz Cole scored a drive to the right side.
Kennebunk went up 2-1 in the fourth as the Lakers committed three straight infield errors. But, Ali Sawyer walked, Abby Scott-Mitchell, who had three hits on the day singled with two out, and Kaylyn Lorrain knocked in the run with a single off a 3-2 pitch.
Kennebunk surged ahead in the fifth as Gabby Harrison and Ally King each singled, setting the stage for cleanup hitter Meg Dube, who hammered the first pitch she saw over the leftfield fence.
LR (3-2) stormed right back with three runs in the home half of the fifth courtesy of a bases loaded walk to score Morse (reached on an error) and an RBI single from Scott-Mitchell.
The Rams outhit the Lakers 8-5, as the home team had four errors on the day.
Morse had a hit and scored twice; Brittany Perreault walked twice and scored; Ali Sawyer walked three times and scored; and Liz Cole walked and scored.
Next: The Lakers host Wells on Friday and Yarmouth on Monday at 4 p.m. LR then travels to Falmouth next Wednesday, May 13 for a 4 p.m. game.
GIRLS’ LACROSSE
Lakers 14, Gould Academy 13: Grace Farrington’s pass to Lindsey Keenan led to the final goal with 1:13 remaining, lifting the Lakers over Gould Academy at Naples.
Lake Region goalie Rachel Bell’s save with two seconds left ended the Huskies’ final chance.
Lauren Jakobs led the Lakers with six goals. Molly Christensen and Keenan scored three each.
LR was losing the entire first half, but closed the gap to 7-6. LR pulled ahead half way through the second half and led by as much as two before GA scored two unanswered goals and tied the game with less then two minutes remaining.
“One of the most exciting and emotional games I’ve been involved with as a coach,†LR Coach David Keenan said.
