Gray-NG 11, Lakers 1: Finding the strike zone was a problem for the Lakers Monday. LR pitching issued 11 walks and seven hits as the Patriots rolled to a victory.

Lake Region (0-2) managed just three hits as Jordan Williams knocked a single and a double.

“We never came to play. We had no emotion,” LR Coach Randy Heath said. “After a great vacation week with preseason play, to come out with this is really disappointing. This team is better.”

Next: The Lakers host  Sacopee Valley on Monday at 4 p.m. The Lakers then travel to Poland on Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

Lakers 11, Wells 4: Ashley Clark went 3-for-3 to pace a 12-hit attack as the Lakers notched their first win of the season Tuesday, downing the Warriors (1-1) at Wells.

The Lakers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Allison Morse (2-for-5) singled with the bases loaded.

Wells responded with a pair of runs in the home half and tied the game in the fourth inning.

Base hits by Ali Sawyer, Brittany Perreault and Kaylyn Lorrain (2-for-4) resulted in a four-run fifth inning.

The Lakers put the finishing touches on Wells by adding four more runs in the seventh inning on hits by Kristen Huntress (who made a nice running catch of a ball hit to the center-right field gap) and Clark, to go along with three walks and an error.

Clark allowed seven hits and three walks, while striking out six. The Lakers committed two errors.

“The team did a great job of bouncing back from a disappointing loss at Gray on Monday. They were very good defending the bunt, something Wells likes to do a lot. Abby (Scott-Mitchell) was quick down the third base line and made strong, accurate throws to first, while Ashley (Clark) showed improvement fielding her position,” Coach Wayne Rivet said. “As I told our four seniors — Ashley, Allison, Abby and Brittany — we need them to step up their play both on the field and at bat, and give our young team leadership they need. Today, they did just that.”

For the Lakers (1-1), Sawyer and Perreault were 2-for-4.

Gray-NG 5, Lakers 1: The Patriots capitalized on two first inning errors to plate three runs to propel G-NG to a win at home.

Although the Lakers outhit the Patriots 8-5, they were unable to deliver when opportunities presented themselves in the first and third innings.

Freshman Kaylyn Lorrain scored the Lakers’ lone run in the third after knocking a single with one out. She moved up on a base hit by Ashley Clark, and then scored on a hit by Allison Morse. Both Clark and Morse went 2-for-3, as did freshman Dessi Berry. Ali Sawyer went 1-for-3.

Over the final four innings, Clark allowed just two hits while striking out four. She ended with six strikeouts and three walks. The LR defense committed three errors.

“While we made a few mistakes early on, I thought the girls managed to hang in there and kept themselves in the game,” Coach Rivet said. “What was disappointing was our nonaggressive approach at the plate. We did a great job in our last scrimmage (against Windham), making contact and showing a willingness to swing at pitches early in the count. Today, we took too many pitches for strikes. Give Gray pitchers credit for throwing a few good changeups, but our batters put themselves in that position by taking pitches and falling behind in the count. Striking out 10 times as a team simply will not get the job done. We need to be better than that.”

Next: The Lakers host  Sacopee on Monday at 4 p.m., and then travel to Poland on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Lakers 13, Wells 3: The Laker girls joined the varsity ranks Tuesday night with an impressive 13-3 victory at Wells.

“The defense really came together today, including a strong showing by freshman goalie Maddie Nelson,” LR Coach David Kennan said.

Madison Simms, Lauren Jakobs and Lindsey Keenan each scored four goals. Molly Christensen added a goal and an assist along with strong defensive play from the middie position.

Next: The Lakers travel to Fryeburg Academy on Friday for a 3:30 p.m. game, and then host Freeport on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
