Carter named DiRenzo Award winner
Junior Tiana-Jo Carter became the sixth Lake Region player to be named the recipient of the Mike DiRenzo Award.
Tiana averaged 13 points over the three-game West tournament. She hauled down 42 rebounds and blocked 17 shots.
“I was excited. I didn’t expect to win it,†the 6-foot-2 Laker center said. “When they announced my name, I was in shock.â€
Created in 1977, the award honors the outstanding player-sportsman in the Western Maine Class B Girls’ Basketball Tournament.
The award pays homage to Mike DiRenzo of Auburn, who was a successful basketball coach at Rockland High School and longtime guidance counselor at Edward Little High School. One of the state’s most distinguished officials, DiRenzo also served as Commissioner of Maine Interscholastic Basketball for 12 years.
